Getting Started In The Modeling Industry

Many women, men, children, and teens that love the fashion and modeling industries ask, How does one get into modeling, or wonder if they have the right look for modeling. Well hopefully I'll shed some light on the subject for all interested in knowing. So here goes. You get into the Modeling industry just as you would any other industry. Choosing a modeling career, or a career in fashion is no different from choosing a career in any other field. Of course there are different requirements and industry standers, but getting in takes just as much hard work , ambition, and education as any other career you choose.

Let me break down the basics:

There are several different Modeling Niches that an individual can go into.

Runway

Commercial

Promotional

Parts

Glamor

Art

Editorial and so on.

All these modeling fields look for different qualities in their models. When deciding to start a modeling career. It is best that you learn about the type of model you want to be. There are so many different type of modeling fields, With different requirements. You should be sure that you qualify for your desired modeling niche (field). When I say qualify, I mean you should be sure that you are the right height, weight, body type, etc. as there are different height and weight requirements for certain modeling niches. If you qualify for your desired niche simply began learning all you can about that particular Modeling Niche and began building your portfolio. If you do not qualify don't worry there is a Modeling Niche out there that you qualify for, you just have to find it. Once you do focus on that particular niche and began to build your portfolio.

Take Snap Shots

Every beginning model should be sure to have some snap shots taken of them. These can be professional or digital snap shots. If you choose to get some professional ones done be sure to find and experience photographer to take them for you. You will want them to be of great quality, because if they aren't you probably would do better with digital photo's taken at home. You always want your professional photos to be of great quality if submitting. A poor quality photo can take all attention off you and your beauty/Talents. These snap shots should be on a plain background with little to not makeup and your hair away from your face. If digital make sure the photo is not blurred and DO NOT TAKE THE PHOTO YOURSELF!

Building your Portfolio

It is very important that you build a portfolio as a model. This is what you will need when interviewing for Modeling jobs. You see, I said interviewing for a modeling job and not submitting to one. Your portfolio is only needed when you go in for a go-see(modeling industry interviewing process), not when you submit. A simple head shot and full body shot should be fine for submissions to agencies, and casting calls that you may qualify for. As a beginning model, is it vital that you begin to build a strong portfolio. Many beginning models tend to mistake a portfolio for just an album of pretty pictures. This is a Mistake you can not afford to make if you want to succeed in this industry. Your portfolio should be Your best shots from Projects you've done with experienced photographers, or Fashion shows you've done etc. it should contain your current measurements, as well as booking information if you choose to remain freelance. If you choose to get contracted with an agency they will assist you in building a portfolio and they will submit you to casting calls that you qualify for. When going into your go-see have your portfolio and be sure to also bring two or three snap shots that they may keep.

Is there some type of investment required.

When I'm asked that question I often think that I'm being asked the wrong question. The question they're trying to ask me is, Is there an upfront fee for representation? So I answer with a no there's no investment. A model should never pay upfront cost to any agency, agent, manger etc. before they have done their job of finding you employment. If you want the answer to is there some type of investment required when starting and establishing your career in modeling. Then the answer is YES. Just as any independent career, you must invest to prosper from it. You have to think of it as , you're starting a business. You must invest in the business supplies and equipment needed for the business as well as advertisement cost to gain exposure for the business. All these things require an investment. You're starting your very own modeling career. Being freelance is being independent. You are working for yourself. In running your business you must invest in your business. This means you will have to pay for portfolio cost (unless built the free way: TFP / TFCD), Travel, Hotel cost, Gas cost, etc. If you don't your modeling business is sure to go no where. Just as any other business that chooses not to invest into the business, to build it up for success. If that's what you think then you're in for a long road
